That's why I don't buy the: "We shouldn't judge people of the past by our modern values," schtick. Dude, there were people alive at the time who knew it was wrong. They knew it was wrong them. They knew it was wrong a hundred years earlier. They knew it was wrong five hundred years earlier.
"Wrong" is not relative to Time and Place. It might be more acceptable, it might even be common, but if it is unjust, if it puts one people over another, if it ascribes morals, values, treatments and moreover if it is connected to money, Wrong Is Wrong, end stop!
And You CAN Fix Stupid, but only If Stupid Is Willing To Undertake The Action. For some it is just a matter of education, compassion and a willingness to understand.
For others it involves a complex surgical procedure that will remove the head from its unnatural and cramped position inside the rectum. Not all surgeries are without risk.
I had no idea he wrote so clearly about the evils of slavery and the practices of people in this country. I think I always assumed he was a hypocrite like all the others. Thank you for enlightening me again.
Thank you for this! I haven’t paid enough attention to Thomas Paine in the past, but now I want to learn more about him and his life. I wonder how his contemporaries viewed his ideas. Must get busy reading!
If the King of France had not sent the French Navy to Yorktown, Virginia, to assist Washington, the British might have prevailed, the founding fathers would have been hung, and slavery would have been abolished in the Colonies without compensation in order to punish the rebels. The US would have become like Canada.
Instead, the King of France lost his head in the French Revolution, which was a reaction to his fiscal mismanagement, including his assistance to the American Revolution.
So, the King might have avoided the French Revolution, which means no Napoleon.

Founding Father who is eclipsed in MAGAt world by luminaries Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, and George. (King or President, take your pick).
History is important.
Ignorance is infinite.
Ignorance is curable.
Stupidity is terminal.
Hypocrisy is right after breathing, hydration, food, sex, hypocrisy.
Paradox, dichotomy, polarazation, disorganization, fear.

Thank you. Your words are sharp and true. Stupidity is terminal. Yes indeed. It has also become epidemic.

Another abolitionist among the Founding Fathers is Aaron Burr.
Thank you very much for this information.
Thank you again for the history lesson. Always admired Thomas Paine. Common Sense was required reading in my high school American History class.
