When things get uncomfortable and one has to admit that a white man in power was a bad man, the answer is to gloss over things rather than to say, "this happened." Just like the truths about Thomas Jefferson, which really bother me that no one told the unvarnished truths about!

Even a child knows you shouldn't do certain things. And it doesn't matter what your skin color is. But if skin color becomes the "reason" for that action, shouldn't that be told as well so the child can see how bad that idea really is? Isn't that what we want our children to understand in a moral and just society?

Thank you yet again for educating and enlightening us. It is especially important in today's sociopolitical c̶e̶s̶s̶p̶o̶o̶l̶ climate that we are aware of such wrongs and atrocities (both past and present), able to identify them, and KNOW that they are intolerable. It is even more critical that our youth learn this.
Oh, puke. And all these things happened so long ago... And yet. And yet. When we read about them, when we learn about these things, we all line up on either side and shout abuse at one another over moldering bones. It Matters Which Tale You Carry Forward. Who you see as Villian. Who you see as Hero. It matters when we are still living with the temper, TONE, and INTOLORANCE in our Day to Day lives. These old animosities are not Dead and Buried. We are still breathing Life Into Them. And if you are breathing life into people who hurt others, harmed others, shamed others, used others, bought, sold, beat, raped and killed and trafficked in other human beings. You Are Wrong. You Have chosen The Wrong Side. You Are The Axis Not The Allies.
You can have respect and feel for long dead Confederates, but if you take their cause to your heart, if you see value in their staunch devaluing of Black Human Beings, whatever you hide it in "States Rights", "Liberty", "Economy" "Olden Times, People Were Just..." Shut it off or go join a cult of likeminded bigots. Don't forget your cargo pants ad tiki torches. One must look the part. All dressed Alike. All Following Orders. All The Same.
And Get Off My Lawn. I'm planting flowers. All Kinds Of Flowers. Every Color. Every Variety. Everything That Will Grow. Whether You Come Over In The Middle Of The Night And Piss On Them Or Not.
