Partly 'bends toward justice' and partly bends away from injustice because you cannot treat other people like they are NOTHING. Even those bred, born and beaten into slavery, these people who knew nothing else, knew their treatment was inhumane, offensive, that it contradicted the Salvation Stories of their enslaver's religion. Yes, not many people will suffer to be referred to or regarded as "contraband".
